There are more than 30 million orphaned and abandoned children in India, accounting for nearly 4% of the country’s youth population. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, thousands more children have been orphaned, and the actual figures are likely much higher than reported. For example, it was estimated that approximately 1,000 children in Uttar Pradesh alone were left orphaned due to the pandemic; however, the true number may be significantly greater.
Even more concerning is the fact that, out of these 30 million children without parental care or legal guardianship, fewer than half a million are placed in institutional care. The vast majority are left to survive on the streets, where they are highly vulnerable to abuse, neglect, and trafficking. The presence of street children in India has unfortunately become so normalized that it is often ignored.
Orphaned children in India, particularly those living on the streets, face numerous serious threats. One of the most significant risks is exploitation. It is estimated that around eight million children between the ages of five and fourteen are engaged in child labour, although the actual number is likely higher. Some are forced to work in fields or factories, while others are employed as domestic workers. Thousands are trafficked each year, and despite ongoing efforts to combat trafficking and child labour, exploitation remains a major concern—especially for children without adult protection.
Girls are especially vulnerable, with many being forced into child marriage; approximately 27% of girls in India are married before the age of 18. Boys are also at risk, with some being drawn into criminal or extremist groups. Although laws exist to protect these children, in reality, many lack any form of immediate or physical protection.
In response to these alarming conditions, we have initiated a project to establish a “Smart Orphanage.” To support this initiative, we are conducting a fundraising campaign. Given the scale of the project, we cannot accomplish it alone and require your support.
